Silence is all that surrounded the platoon of soldiers. Each one buried in their own thoughts. They had begun their travels to these lands directly from the battlefields leaving most tired but their loyalty outweighed everything. Their leader and Queen was all they lived for now as their families had most likely died or found others as theirs.

Her hand came up to call all those behind her to a halt. Finally coming upon shelter of the trees, she brought them all to a halt. Twisting back slightly, she let her voice carry over all that was left of her personal platoons. "We'll camp here for the night." With that she dismounted her steed.

Any on lookers would see them as depressed but instead they just worked silently as that was learned when your at war. Each one speaking even more than words with a look to each other. Soon tents were erected and horses hobbled. And than in shifts they worked to get fires going and gear cleaned.

All worked together with no one better than the others. Only once the basics were done did a small group gather and leave for a walk. If followed a secret would be revealed as they walked till far from the camp before moving apart, each one looking to the darkening skies as a group of dragons descended upon them.

Augusta laid her fingers upon the snout of her dragon as she took a moment to observe her riders. Besides the platoon that was escorting, the rest of her army was left to take the spoils of war to their people. The kingdom she came from was one of many riches and the lands ripe with fertile soil. Everything a conquering society would love to lay their hands on.

The only thing that kept them under her rule was the engagement rules laid out by her ancestors. When war was declared an ancient power wrapped around all those that raised a weapon to another. Their battle taken to a realm separate from the others. The results leaving the soldiers with a much lengthened life and only death to take them from the realm.

Death was the only thing that brought the people back to their homes until victory is declared. This battle had left her almost four hundred cycles. The rest of her family now grown and generations ahead. With her victory it placed her back within power but that was what brought her to these foreign lands. Somehow an outsider slipped into their realm of war and became her husband. Now she was here to bring him home to their lands.

There were some other things to discuss but he had told her that he had eternity to await her freedom. Now her soldiers that knew they had nothing to go home to, traveled with her as well. Each one dealing with their own demons. The handful of riders were most of the active flyers that had come to war and survived. Her elite and brethren for they shared even their kinship pull as a flock.

Turning her attention back to the dragon companion of her own, she laid her forehead against his to listen to his internal ramblings. They had found food but also felt the evidence of many divine in this land. They would have to travel with even more caution.

Coming to the conclusion that the flyers were well and safe, she allowed the monster of the skies to take flight and soon to follow the others dragons as well. She kept them safely separated from the rest of the soldiers for surprise tactics. Dragons could fly in easily and catch ambushes off guard than if they knew dragons were with them.

Sighing, Augusta lead the group back to the rest of the men and women.

Alys was angry, there was no better way to say it than as it plainly was. Why was she angry? That had a simple answer, she wasn't doing anything. Nothing, not a thing. A month had passed since they had left the realm beyond and returned home and they had not encountered a single hostile thing since they had arrived back, no bandits or highwaymen, no rogue armies or mercenary groups.. nothing! For thirty days her sole job had been to ride, eat and sleep. It was maddening! Nearby her warhorse Archimedes had seemingly adopted a similar mood, the horse she was sure had counted to a million or more in the last month and had attempted to bite anyone who came near him. The mood was so dark in Alys's little corner of the camp that everyone else had set themselves far away from the pair, then again anyone who strayed to close tended to be met with a harsh glare that seemingly transmitted her mood without words being necessary.

"Least the food has gotten better..." She mumbled to herself though Archimedes snorted and shook his head as if in reply, she glanced towards the horse a rare small smile crossing her lips before returning to her thoughts.

Watching people around the camp had proven no more entertaining than it had a week or even a year ago, almost everyone else who was here owned loyalty and was a citizen of the queens realm. Alys on the other hand was an outsider which didn't win her many friends to begin with, she'd joined up with several other swords for hire when the war had broken out and was now one of the only ones left. Two had departed weeks ago having been paid in advance, poor fools hadn't realized that having left the coin to their families or somewhere safe that after so long the coin would likely already be gone or spent. Alys hadn't been interested in the money, she'd been in it for the war itself.

"Lots of worthy warriors to test my steel against, well at least it wasn't a total lie." Leaning back on the log she had been using as a chair she snagged her backpack and dumped it down next to the fire she had prepared for when night fell, electing to stay in her armor as always she was prepared the moment a problem would arise.

No one had mentioned when she'd signed up that there would be months without fighting with sieges and truce's called on several occasions throughout the conflict, the actual number of warriors she had found could stand to fight her numbered a poor few. Most of her time had been spent slaughtering weaklings who seemed as numerous as wheat in a field, all and all the time spent hadn't really lived up to her high expectations so naturally she was angry. As if on cue Finius one of the mercenaries who remained decided to take a seat on the log across from her, the harsh glare that most shied away from having no effect on the older warrior. The man had been in his forties when the war had started so she had no idea how old he was now, he however had proven himself to be a capable and strong warrior and hence had earned Alys's hard won respect.

"You look moody." He said plainly as he settled his own travel pack down next to his log, the edge in his voice made it clear he wasn't any happier than her he was just better at hiding it.

"Who'd know they'd declare world peace before we returned?" She said shortly with a growl that sent Archimedes counting again as he normally did when his mistress was agitated, she wanted something to do but she had already done everything so sitting and waiting was all that remained.

"You know as well as I do that's bull, world doesn't just turn pacifist because the alpha dog's leave." He said with a grin and a wink, few men could get away with such forms of conversation with Alys however this man was certainly one of them

"No, I suppose not... but it's still too damned QUIET!"
The last word would ring throughout the camp bouncing off trees and rocks while turning heads and causing alarm, a quiet chuckle sounded from across the fire and after a moment Alys couldn't help but join in... just for a moment.

With the hushed words of everyone else, by the time Augusta got back she had clearly heard the shouts of Alys. The woman was something to wonder, but one hell of a fighter. She really couldn't complain as she was even on edge after the peaceful rides since the war. Only subtle tack allowed her to hide the fact she was ready to slash at every shadow that moved.

Her lips quivered even so as the shouting could easily pull unwanted attention. She didn't want to start a war again. Losing lives was the only thing that kept her from falling for the addiction Alys clearly held. Instead of stopping at her tent as she normally would have done, Augusta made her way through the camp to the clearing left for the hired mercenaries.

"If you're that wound up, you can take up the role of scouting the area tonight. Just don't go around killing innocent people." Although orders were rarely followed, the request was one made of logic rather than demands.

"Well well... so you can laugh." Finius remarked with a smile to match his surprise, reaching down into his backpack he fished out a water skin his fingers working expertly upon the stopper.

Alys colored slightly which was also something rare as she normally didn't get embarrassed, perhaps the departure from the realm had affected her emotional state somehow? The thought didn't last long however as she turned her attention to the unlit campfire, it was still too early to be making a fire as the nip that normally followed the setting of the sun had yet to arrive. Her attention flew to the queen as she approached the camp her dark mood returning almost instantly, Queen Augusta was an interesting person in Alys's mind as she seemed a mix of both cowardly and valiant. On the field she seemed to switch between fighting on high upon her lizard or riding into battle upon her horse, granted she normally wasn't at the front since the common soldiery idolized their queen so much in her opinion.

"Define innocent? I think we may have differing views..."
She replied her commonly seen smirk crossing her features as she gazed back at the queen, peace was a noble ideal but it was useless to Alys who wanted nothing but battle and warfare.

"I'll go with her, keep her out of trouble."
Finius said as he finally got the stopper out of his water skin, not a moment was wasted as he lifted the skin to his lips for several long gulps of whatever lay within.

Alys's eyes shot to Finius a harsh glare burrowing into him but he refused to look at her, the man had learned early that not looking back tended to avoid confrontations when suggesting something she may not like. He had guts that was for sure, more than she could say for a lot of the others who surrounded her. Their problem however was more they simply devoted themselves to their queen and not the fight, fighting to them was a gateway towards peace so they could relax and grow fat most likely. None the less Augusta knew her well enough to know that Alys didn't kill innocents, what was the point in fighting someone who didn't have a weapon or even the skill to use one? Watching Finius drink had suddenly made Alys realize how long she had been brooding for, reaching into her own backpack her glare turning to a more neutral look she began rummaging through her belongings for her water skin.
